With contributions from its member organizations, ANHB has been active for thirty-five years as an advocate on behalf of health needs and concerns of all Alaska Natives. The ANHB Board of Directors prepares an annual set of priority issues for consideration by the United States Congress and the Alaska State Legislature.
Through formal testimony in legislative forums and presentations in national consultation meetings, ANHB has been successful in securing operating budget increases from the Indian Health Service for Alaska-specific programs. Programs or projects include the Community Health Aide Program, construction funds for the replacement of the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, and sustained funding for construction of rural Alaska water and sanitation facilities.
ANHB continues to advocate for improvements in both clinical and preventative services in the areas of
- Access to medical care for rural patients,
- Health promotion and disease prevention,
- Substance abuse and mental heath services development,
- Long-term care and community based health services,
- Funding, construction & maintenance of community health facilities, and
- Alaska Native health professional development
